Operation Holiday – Helping Spooner House Feed Over 400 Families

thank-you-van

Thanksgiving Day is about more than just giving thanks – it’s about helping those around us as well. This year, we teamed up with Spooner House to help provide families in need with a Thanksgiving Day feast.

With the help of everyone that stopped by, Spooner House was able to collect 153 turkeys, nearly 600 non-perishable items, and $574 that will help provide an additional 190 meals to be distributed through the Spooner House food pantry.

Operation Holiday runs throughout the month of November, collecting food each day to help feed as many families as possible. On Thanksgiving of 2013, 450 families were provided with a Thanksgiving feast, complete with stuffing, cranberry sauce, side dishes, desserts, and even coffee and tea. On behalf of Spooner House, we’d like to thank all of you who donated and helped make this year’s Operation Holiday a successful one.

News Channel 8 Covers the Spooner House Food Drive!

news-channel-8-at-on-time

With only one day until the Spooner House Operation Holiday food drive, News Channel 8 arrived early this morning to report on the event.

Operation Holiday, a food drive mission that takes place throughout the month of November, aims to bring people together and feed families in need this Thanksgiving Day. By collecting donations of frozen turkeys, canned vegetables and fruits, stuffing, pie crust and filling, coffee, tea, and more, they are able to put together baskets for families that cannot afford their own Thanksgiving meals.

An average basket for each family is made up of an assortment of these items: 1 box of instant potatoes, 2 packages of gravy, 1 box or bag of stuffing mix, 4 cans of vegetables, 1 can of cranberry sauce, pie crust mix, pie filling of any type, 1 jar of pickles, 1 can of olives, 1 can of evaporated milk, 2 cans of fruit, coffee, tea, sugar, powdered drink mix, corn bread mix, brownie or cake mix, and napkins. Essentially, everything that a family could hope for on Thanksgiving Day.

Spooner House will be collecting food donations in our office parking lot, located at 155 New Haven Avenue in Derby, CT, from 7 AM to 7 PM. Join Dr. Bruce Sofferman of Smile Dental Centers and his family as they help Spooner House meet their goals for Operation Holiday! For more information, tune into News Channel 8 at 5 PM today!

Operation Holiday – Help Spooner House Provide Families With Thanksgiving

Every year, Spooner House brings people together by asking those who are fortunate enough to host their own Thanksgiving dinner, to give the gift of Thanksgiving dinner to a family who cannot afford it. They call this Operation Holiday.

spooner-house-operation-holidaySpooner House is run by Area Congregations Together to help provide meals for those who are unable to cook for themselves or afford food. They were founded in 1979. Within three years, they began coordinating with the Valley Food Bank Network. Shortly after, they opened the first homeless shelter in the valley. Their mission is to help provide food, shelter, and support services to those in need. From this mission, Operation Holiday was born.

Operation Holiday supplies individual families with everything needed for a traditional Thanksgiving feast – a turkey, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, veggies, pie and pie crust, cranberry sauce, corn bread, pickles, olives, fruit, coffee, tea, milk, and sugar. More than that, Operation Holiday gives families the opportunity to sit down to a home made meal with their loved ones.

On November 21st, you can help the Spooner House with Operation Holiday by donating food items to help make sure that no one goes with out a holiday meal. Dr. Bruce Sofferman and family will be dressed up as Pilgrims and Native Americans in the On Time parking lot, located on Route 34 at 155 New Haven Avenue in Derby. Operation Holiday is more than just one day. It is currently underway, with events all month long. If you’re not able to stop by our parking lot on the 21st, click here for a list of dates and places where Operation Holiday will be taking place.
